Which EEL grade suits a Himachal pharma plant?
Under IS 1180, oil-filled distribution transformers are sold at energy efficiency levels from EEL1 to EEL5. A higher level means lower losses and a higher purchase price. For a pharma or FMCG plant in Baddi, Barotiwala or Nalagarh, the right answer depends mostly on how many hours the unit is energised and how heavily it is loaded.
Two kinds of loss
No-load loss happens whenever the transformer is energised, even at night. Load loss rises with the square of the current. Plants that keep HVAC and clean-room air handling running around the clock pay for no-load loss every hour of the year.
A practical rule
If the transformer is energised all year and loaded above about half its rating for most shifts, compare EEL3 and above. If it feeds a seasonal or single-shift load, a lower level may be enough. Ask us for the loss figures of two grades and work out the yearly units saved at your tariff.
Amorphous cores
Jaybee has built amorphous-core transformers since 2017. They cut no-load loss sharply and suit plants that never switch off.
What to put in your RFQ
- kVA rating and voltages
- Required EEL grade, or a request to compare two
- Expected loading and operating hours
- Indoor or outdoor, and site altitude
